Frequently asked questions

Common questions about sourcing brake parts from Chinese manufacturers — MOQ, payment terms, lead times, quality verification, US import duties, and more.

What is the typical minimum order quantity (MOQ) for brake pads from a Chinese factory?
For private-label brake pads, typical MOQ is 500-1,000 sets per SKU. For supplier-own-brand catalog product, 100-200 sets is achievable. With a setup fee of $300-500, many factories will accept 200 sets even on private-label runs. The MOQ is negotiable but partly reflects real costs — production line setup time, scheduling, and customer-quality screening.
How long does it take to receive a brake pad order from China?
Standard production lead time is 25-45 days from PO confirmation, depending on the factory's current backlog and whether your order is private-label or catalog. Add 18-25 days for sea freight to US west coast ports, plus 7-14 days for customs clearance and inland trucking. Total: typically 50-85 days door-to-door for a first PO. Repeat orders to the same factory often run faster (15-30 days production) because tooling and formulation are already set.
What payment terms are standard for sourcing from Chinese factories?
30% T/T (telegraphic transfer / wire) deposit on PO acceptance, 70% T/T balance against B/L (Bill of Lading) copy. This is the dominant pattern for auto-parts B2B trade — used by 70-80% of POs. Letter of Credit makes sense for orders above $50K-100K or when corporate finance policies require it. Avoid factories that demand 100% upfront, individual-name bank accounts, or crypto payment.
What's the difference between a real Chinese factory and a trading company?
A real factory has its own production equipment, raw materials inventory, and a workforce of 50-300+ people. A trading company has an office and a sales team but outsources production to factories. Three quick checks: (1) the address — real factories are in industrial zones, trading companies are in business districts; (2) the product range — real factories specialize, trading companies sell across many unrelated categories; (3) employee count — under 20 employees suggests trading. IATF 16949 certification is harder to fake than ISO 9001.
What US import duties apply to Chinese-made brake parts in 2026?
Brake parts import under HS code 8708.30.50, which has a 2.5% MFN base duty. On top: 25% Section 301 List 3 tariff (in effect since 2018), plus reciprocal/additional tariffs imposed in 2025-2026 that have ranged from 10% to 50% depending on the executive-order regime in effect. Total stacked rate has typically been in the 50-65% range. Tariff rates have been moving frequently — verify with a licensed customs broker before each shipment.
How do I verify the quality of a Chinese brake-pad factory before placing a production order?
Three layers: (1) paper qualification — verify IATF 16949 / ISO 9001 certifications with the certifying body, request recent export records and customer references; (2) sample-and-test — order paid samples ($30-50 with air freight), test fitment and noise/dust on actual vehicles for 200+ miles; (3) factory visit OR third-party pre-shipment inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV at $300-600). For first orders with new factories, all three layers are recommended.
Can I source Toyota OEM brake parts directly from China?
Genuine Toyota OEM-marked parts are produced under contract with Toyota and must move through Toyota's authorized distribution channel. What you can source from Chinese factories is OE-equivalent product — same OEM number references, same fitment, manufactured to OE specifications by Tier-1 friction or rotor factories that may also be Toyota's actual OE supplier. Akebono, for example, is Toyota's OE brake pad supplier and also sells the same product as Akebono ProACT aftermarket.
What's the difference between Akebono ProACT and Brembo OE Replacement when sourcing aftermarket brake pads?
Akebono ProACT is a ceramic, low-copper formulation optimized for daily-driven Asian-fitment NVH and dust-signature priorities. Brembo OE Replacement is typically a low-metallic / semi-metallic formulation optimized for higher thermal capacity and peak braking force. For Toyota Camry daily-driver applications, Akebono-grade is usually the right benchmark. For V6 Camry, TRD trim, or heavier duty cycles, Brembo-grade. They aren't interchangeable specs — when sourcing, target one or the other explicitly.
Do Hybrid Camry brake parts work with non-Hybrid Camry?
No. Hybrid Camry uses different rear brake hardware due to the electric park brake (EPB) on most trims and regenerative-brake-friendly friction formulations. Hybrid rear pads (04466-33240, 04466-78010), Hybrid rear rotors (42431-33180), and Hybrid rear calipers (47830-33060 / 47850-33060) are not interchangeable with non-Hybrid versions. Front-brake hardware is mostly shared between Hybrid and non-Hybrid Camry.
What does it cost to ship brake parts from China to the US?
Sea freight LCL (less than container load): roughly $90-130 per cubic meter, plus $1,500-3,000 in handling/customs/drayage fees. For 200-400 sets of brake pads, total ocean shipping cost is typically $1,700-3,500. Sea freight FCL (full 40ft container): $4,500-7,000 for the container, holds approximately 25,000 sets — drops per-unit shipping to $0.20-0.30. Air freight only makes sense for samples or emergency stockouts.
